BOLO! MacOS Infostealer Malware on the Rise

With Mac devices growing in popularity with individual users and businesses alike, cybercrooks are putting more focus on Macs and away from Windows PCs. And of course, with help from AI, the report finds the scale of these attacks will likely increase.
Infamous Infostealer Malware
Infostealer malware has earned its name for good reason. Today’s infostealers not only siphon data like passwords, credit cards, financial accounts, and Social Security numbers, but also cryptocurrency wallets, authentication cookies, and more are on the menu. What criminals do with this hijacked info includes social engineering, ransomware, and other malware attacks. One thing is for sure; victims are looking at a potential avalanche of further crimes. Remember, it’s not just individual users at risk, but organizations as well.
Stopping the Infostealer
One fact about Macs is the user has to take an action, usually the result of being tricked, to download infostealer and other malware. From this vantage point, the following tips help keep your Mac malware-free.
- Always practice app hygiene. Only download apps from the official App Stores, and never sideload from third-party outlets.
- Beware of phishing red flags. A whopping 91% of malware attacks start with phishing.
- Never click links from unknown and unexpected senders. Contact the sender to check if the links are truly safe, or inquire at the legitimate site of your account.
- Always enable 2FA or MFA when available, and consider using a VPN.
- Antivirus software is a must and be sure to shop around for different providers.
- Make sure your devices, regardless of which operating system you use, is updated with the latest security patches.
- There’s no doubt infostealer malware is bad news, and according to the Malwarebytes report it’s getting worse for Mac fans. Whether a Mac or PC user, being cyber-smart is a smart move.
