Making sure your software is always up to date makes for much safer online activity, whether you’re traveling or working on the go. That’s especially true when using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Some use them for security, others for privacy, and many for both. Having a VPN makes you a much tougher target for attackers, but only if it’s running at full capacity. 

You need to know your VPN provides cutting-edge technology for today and tomorrow. No one should use, much less keep paying for, an outdated VPN. It puts your security and privacy at serious risk, and you should know about it. Checking your VPN for the following features shows if yours still makes the grade. 

The most crucial feature of any VPN is a high-level of privacy protection with frequent updates. It should be clear how your information is managed and what data gets logged with the provider.

Split tunneling lets you choose which apps go through your regular internet or those going through your VPN’s encryption. The reason you might want to split tunnel is to have increased speeds to websites for which you don’t need to protect non-sensitive data or to retain access to local resources such as printers. Another reason is to avoid being blocked to some websites because of your location.

Equal encryption determines how your data is concealed and top VPN’s support it. Should a VPN offer proprietary protocols, they should be open-source and be leery of those with closed source protocols.
