Microsoft’s Record-Breaking Patch Tuesday

Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday wasn't just big. It was record-breaking. So, considering it’s already into October and you missed it, it’s time to get right on it.
Microsoft released security updates addressing nearly 1,000 vulnerabilities, making September's update the largest Patch Tuesday release in the company's history. Depending on how the vulnerabilities are counted, security researchers put the total between 964 and 974.
That's A Lot Of Fixing
Of the vulnerabilities addressed, more than 100 were considered critical, meaning some could potentially allow attackers to take significant control of affected systems. A large number involved Windows, but Microsoft's other products and services were also affected.
And here's the part that should get everyone's attention: Two of the vulnerabilities were already being actively exploited by attackers. In other words, they were zero-day vulnerabilities. Both could allow an attacker who had already gained access to a Windows computer to elevate their privileges and obtain powerful system-level control.
What Does This Mean For You?
For most everyday users, the message isn't "panic." It's "update."
If your Windows computer is configured for automatic updates, Microsoft says security updates are generally installed automatically. Still, it's worth checking that your computer is actually up to date.
This enormous Patch Tuesday also illustrates something important: Finding security flaws is accelerating. Security researchers have pointed to AI-assisted vulnerability discovery as one factor contributing to the growing number of bugs being identified and fixed.
That's actually good news. Finding and fixing a vulnerability is much better than leaving it sitting there waiting for a criminal to discover it first.
So, when Windows asks you to restart for an update, maybe don't click "Remind me tomorrow" for the 47th time.
